My BMW E30 318is
Purchased: 29/06/2010
Parted Company: 14/08/2012

The white BMW 318i was ok, but after a while a few things started nagging at me. This was mainly because it never felt very comfortable at motorway speeds. It was very buzzy, and didnt feel particularily planted. Secondly the M40 was very tappety. From what I've heard, they all seem to be down to the fact that the camshalf wears (mainly when the oil spray bar gets blocked and starves it of oil). As it has hydraulic lifters there is no adjustment you can do, so it's either fit a new cam/lifters, or live with it. I lived with it until I got fed up of it sounded like it had been thrashed - which is where the 318is came in!

After driving a 320i and a 318is I was impressed with how much quicker the 318is felt. The 320i in comparison felt heavy, and about as quick as the 318i. The 1.8 16v engine seemed to be the best mix of decent performance/economy for a daily car. The added bonus of the 318is is that it's got improved suspension and rear disks. A 325i would be nice, but they are now starting to go up in price, and are pretty thirsty.

This particular one cropped up on eBay a few miles up the road, so we decided to go along and see it. It seemed tidy enough, with just a few issues that needed sorting. Some of the paint was a bit scratched on the bonnet/peeling on the wings, but there was very little rust anywhere. I think that plus the fact that it's done 185k meant that it went quite cheap!

It's been owned by someone who worked for BMW and had a lot of work done including having the head re-built as well as the timing chain, tensioners, etc... done. The standard 15" wheels have had the centres sprayed grey and it's been lowered 40mm all round.

Unfortunately this met a bit of an unexpected end. We came back from holiday to find that one of our neighbours must have waited till we were away before reporting it for no tax (I was in the process of fixing the starter motor at the time). By the time I got back the storage costs were quite high, plus I would have, had to get it towed back, so I signed the car over.
